Holidays in Japan with Yamasan
by B2C Yamasan on Aug 26 2025
Japan is a country rich in culture and seasonal observances. From New Year to Obon, each holiday has its own meaning, customs, and ways of celebrating. At Yamasan Kyoto Uji, we love exploring these traditions and sharing them with our customers.
January — Shogatsu (New Year)
The most important holiday in Japan, Shogatsu is a time for family, reflection, and renewal. People enjoy special foods like osechi ryori, visit shrines, and share wishes for a prosperous year.
February — Setsubun
Celebrated at the start of spring, Setsubun involves rituals to ward off evil spirits by throwing roasted soybeans and chanting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons out! Luck in!).
March — Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival / Girls’ Day)
A day to celebrate and pray for the health and happiness of girls. Families display ornamental dolls and enjoy traditional sweets.
April — Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing)
Springtime marks the cherry blossom season. Hanami is not an official holiday but a beloved tradition where people gather under sakura trees to picnic, drink tea, and celebrate nature’s beauty.
May — Golden Week
A cluster of national holidays in late April to early May. Many Japanese take time off to travel, relax, and enjoy family activities.
August — Obon
A Buddhist holiday honoring ancestors. Families visit graves, offer prayers, and light lanterns. Obon is also a time for reflection and family gatherings.
November — Shichi-Go-San
A festival celebrating the growth and well-being of children at ages three, five, and seven. Families visit shrines and dress children in traditional clothing.
December — Winter Holidays & Preparation for New Year
December is a time for preparing for Shogatsu, cleaning homes, and enjoying seasonal foods and teas.
🍵 Celebrate the Seasons with Japanese Tea
Each holiday is an opportunity to enjoy traditional Japanese tea. At Yamasan Kyoto Uji, our premium matcha, green teas, and lifestyle products help you bring a taste of Japan into your own seasonal celebrations.
